The Victron Orion XS 12/12-70A is the most powerful 12-V charge booster in the Orion XS family: It charges your auxiliary battery while driving at up to 70 A and 1000 W—with up to 98.5% efficiency.

It’s designed for dual-battery systems in campers, vans, and RVs, even when paired with modern smart alternators. Using VictronConnect, you can precisely adjust the input and output current in 0.1-A increments to match your alternator’s capacity.

Which model do you need?

  • Orion XS 12/12-50A – 700 W, IP65. The right choice if the charge booster will be installed in a damp or splash-prone area, such as under the vehicle floor or in the engine compartment.
  • Orion XS 12/12-70A (this product) – 1,000 W, but only IP20. It must be installed in a dry interior. In return, you’ll charge significantly faster—ideal for large lithium battery banks starting at approx. 200 Ah.

Used in a camper

  • Fast charging of the auxiliary battery while driving—even in Euro 6 vehicles with a smart alternator
  • Large LiFePO4 battery banks that cannot be fully charged within a reasonable time using solar power alone
  • Year-round operation: At low temperatures, the charger automatically shuts off, protecting your lithium battery
  • Multiple units can be connected in parallel if you need even more charging current

Installation and Wiring

The Orion XS 12/12-70A has an IP20 rating—it must be installed in a dry and protected location, i.e., inside the vehicle and not in the engine compartment or under the vehicle. If your installation location is exposed to splashing water, use the 50-A model with IP65 rating.

Victron specifies clear requirements for this unit: a minimum wire gauge of 25 mm² (4 AWG) for cable lengths under 10 m—on both sides, not just for longer lengths. This includes a fuse rated from 80 to 100 A on each side, installed as close as possible to the respective battery. The terminals accommodate a maximum of 25 mm²; the tightening torque is 5.6 Nm at 25 mm². You’ll find cables, cable lugs, and fuses in our product range.

Everything is configured and monitored via Bluetooth using the VictronConnect app. You can integrate the charger into an existing Victron system with Cerbo GX via the VE.Direct connection (including DVCC).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between this and the Orion XS 12/12-50A?
Higher power output (1,000 W instead of 700 W, 70 A instead of 50 A), but a lower protection rating: IP20 instead of IP65. The 70-A charger should therefore be installed in a dry indoor location.

What cable gauge and fuse do I need?
Victron specifies 25 mm² (4 AWG) as the minimum gauge, provided the cable is less than 10 m long, plus an 80- to 100-A fuse on each side. For longer runs, you should calculate the voltage drop and opt for a larger gauge—ask us, and we’ll do the math for you.

Is it compatible with my alternator?
Yes, as long as you limit the input current appropriately. That’s exactly what the stepless current limiting is for—it prevents you from overloading the alternator. If in doubt, ask us; we’ll help you with the design.

Does it work with LiFePO4?
Yes. There’s a lithium preset, and the low-temperature shutdown protects your battery when charging in winter.

Can I connect two units in parallel?
Yes, multiple Orion XS units can be operated in parallel to increase the charging current.

Is it galvanically isolated?
No. If you need galvanic isolation, use an Orion-Tr Smart.
