In vehicle systems, DC voltage measurement is the primary task: You measure the open-circuit voltage of the auxiliary battery, check the actual voltage delivered to the battery terminal by solar regulators or charge boosters, and test the voltage drop across a long wire under load. Use the continuity tester to check fuses, ground points, switches, and connectors—the buzzer sounds as soon as a connection is established, so you don’t have to look at the display. Use the resistance measurement function to locate broken wires and test sensors and heating elements. You can measure small loads up to 10 A in series directly at the 10-A input. On the 230-V side, you can check shore power cables, CEE extension cords, and outlets for voltage and continuity.
Manual range selection instead of automatic. You set the measurement range yourself using the rotary switch. This requires one extra step, but you always know which range the device is measuring in, and the display won’t change during the measurement. If the display shows only a “1” on the far left, the selected range is too small—in that case, switch to the next higher range. The resolution of 1,999 counts means that in the 20-V range, voltages up to 19.99 V are displayed with two decimal places.
Features for working in a vehicle: The display backlight makes the reading visible under the vehicle, in the trunk, or in the passenger compartment at night. Data Hold freezes the reading when you’re measuring a spot you can’t look at at the same time. The automatic shut-off feature conserves battery power when the device is left idle. The two-tone housing with a wraparound rubber guard is tested for drop resistance from a height of 1 m, and a fold-out stand allows the device to be propped up at an angle. All functions are protected against accidental operation by a self-resetting safety feature.
Regarding safety classification: The MT-1210 is classified as CAT II 600 V according to EN 61010-1. This covers measurements on outlet circuits, end devices, and the 12-V vehicle electrical system. For measurements directly on the distribution panel, the supply line, or the meter, a CAT III or CAT IV device is required—this multimeter is not intended for such applications. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use this to measure AC current?
No. The MT-1210 measures DC current up to 10 A and AC voltage up to 500 V, but not AC current. To measure current on the 230-V side, you’ll need a current clamp.
How do I measure the current draw of a 12-V device?
Current is always measured in series: disconnect the circuit, plug the red test lead into the 10-A jack, set the rotary switch to the appropriate DC range, and connect the multimeter in series with the circuit. Stay below 10 A—this device is not designed for higher currents or for measurements without disconnecting the circuit.
Can I use it to take measurements in the fuse box of my home’s electrical system?
No. The CAT II 600 V rating is sufficient for outlet circuits and end devices. CAT III or CAT IV is required for distribution panels and supply lines.
Why does the display show only a “1”?
This is the overflow indicator: the measured value is greater than the set range. Set the rotary switch one level higher.
What do “3 1/2-digit” and “1999 counts” mean?
The display has three full digits (0–9) plus a first digit that can only show 0 or 1. The highest displayable value is therefore 1999—up to 199.9 V in the 200-V range and up to 19.99 V in the 20-V range.
