The Victron Energy Battery Balancer (MPN BBA000100100) is a state of charge equalizer or voltage equalizer for 24V and 48V battery banks.
It balances the state of charge of two 12V batteries connected in series or of several parallel strings of batteries connected in series.
The balancer thus prevents damage to the battery due to an imbalance in the state of charge.
The problem: The service life of an expensive battery bank can be significantly shortened by an imbalance in the state of charge
A battery with a slightly increased internal leakage current in a 24V or 48V bank consisting of several batteries connected in series/parallel,
that this battery and batteries connected in parallel are not sufficiently charged and, in the case of batteries connected in series, overcharging occurs in this case.
In addition, new cells or batteries should all have the same initial state of charge when they are connected in series.
Smaller differences can be ironed out during the constant voltage phase or the equalization charge.
Larger differences, however, lead to excessive gassing (which is caused by overcharging) in the batteries,
that had a higher initial state of charge and due to sulphation (caused by the lack of charging) in the batteries
with a lower initial state of charge.
The solution: Battery balancing with the Victron Battery Balancer
The Battery Balancer balances the state of charge of two or more 12V batteries connected in series.
When the charging voltage of a 24V battery system rises above 27.3V, the Battery Balancer switches on and compares the voltage of the two batteries connected in series.
of the two batteries connected in series. The battery balancer draws a current of up to 0.7V from the battery (or the batteries connected in parallel) with the highest voltage.
a current of up to 0.7A. The resulting difference in charging current then ensures that all batteries are equalized to the same state of charge.
If necessary, several balancers can be connected in parallel.
A 48 V battery bank can be balanced with three battery balancers.
LED displays
Green: on (battery voltage > 27.3V)
Orange: lower battery circuit active (deviation > 0.1V)
Orange: upper battery circuit active (deviation > 0.1V)
Red: alarm (deviation > 0.2V) Remains active until the deviation has fallen below 0.14V or until the system voltage falls below 26.6V.
Alarm relay
Normally open. Closes when the red LED switches on and opens when the red LED switches off.
Reset alarm
Two connections are available for connecting a pushbutton. If the two connections are coupled, the relay is reset.
The "Reset" status remains active until the alarm has passed. The relay then closes again.
